Crusting and/or a slight redness at the entrance wound during healing is normal, and no cause for concern. Itching, a rash, and enlargement of the piercing usually indicate an allergic reaction to the jewelry or cleaning agent. Signs of an infection include: excessive swelling, pain, redness, or discharge of dark colored, foul smelling pus. Removing your jewelry will not necessarily end an infection and could make matters worse by eliminating an exit for the discharge of pus and matter. Leave your jewelry in when contacting us or a physician.
Healing time for piercings varies greatly from piercing to piercing and from person to person. Some people assume they can remove their jewelry at any time and reinsert it easily - this is not the case. Jewelry must be left in the piercing at all times for at least the FIRST SIX MONTHS. A year is even better. Most people are sufficiently healed after this time and are able to leave their jewelry out and reinsert it later. A few will lose the piercing altogether, if the jewelry is left out for a long period of time. Even though superficially healed, some time is required for a piercing to “season” and “toughen up.” If the jewelry MUST be removed for a short period of time during the first few months, clean the piercing as described, and insert a short piece of mono filament nylon fishing line or “Weed-Eater” line through the piercing. Soak this line in a small amount of LISTERINE® for at least 10 minutes prior to inserting. This is virtually undetectable, particularly to X-Ray, and will keep the piercing open until jewelry can be reinserted.
NEVER use products such as: rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, instant hand sanitizer, bacitracin®, Neosporin®, Vaseline®, tea tree oil, vitamin E, or anything not recommended by your piercer, to clean or heal your piercing. While some people assume these products help your piercing, they do more harm than good and should not be used. Absolutely no swimming for six weeks! This includes bathtubs, hot tubs, pools, lakes, oceans, rivers, ....any standing bodies of water. The after care you give your piercing will determine how quickly and well it heals. It is important to do everything possible to avoid infection. The information contained in this brochure will provide some general guidelines for the care of your new piercing.
